UK REMOVES TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS FOR UGANDA NATIONAL PARKS

4 Days Uganda Wildlife Safari Queen Elizabeth National Park

It is interesting to hear that the UK has removed travel restrictions for Uganda national parks, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Semuliki National Park.

These travel restrictions/travel advisories were in place for about two years, and during this time, the visitor numbers, especially from the UK, had reduced, which affected tourism operations in Queen Elizabeth NP and Semuliki NP.

Official Security Updates about Queen Elizabeth NP and Semuliki NP

The FCDO considers that Queen Elizabeth National Park and Semuliki NP are generally safe for travel for UK travelers now.

The decision to revise the travel advisory follows intensified security efforts and improved stability in the regions by the Uganda security forces and park rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

However, the FCDO still advises travelers to

  • Ensure that they get adequate travel insurance to cover any form of emergency.
  • Listen to the local security advice and follow all the park rules and instructions from the rangers.
  • Exercise a high degree of caution near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan due to the risks of cross-border attacks, though visiting all Uganda national parks is considered safe.

The History of The Travel Restriction on Queen Elizabeth NP And Semuliki NP

The restrictions were enacted after the killing of a honeymooning couple, a British citizen, David Barlow, and his South African wife, Celia Emmaretia Geyer Barlow, plus their tour guide, Eric Ayai, on 17 October 2023.

The tourists were on a safari to see gorillas and other primates when they were attacked in Queen Elizabeth National Park by a rebel from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

In the aftermath, the forensic teams from the UK and South Africa assisted the Uganda police in the investigation, and the bodies of the deceased were repatriated.
