If gorilla trekking in Uganda is on your bucket list, there’s some exciting news you’ll want to hear. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has rolled out new updates that directly affect how you book your trek — and even improve your chances of securing a permit.
From newly opened gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to a more organized booking system and a unique bonus wildlife experience, these changes are a big win for gorilla trekking enthusiasts.
The announcement was made by UWA Executive Director, Dr. James Musinguzi, on April 14, 2026.
What’s New for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
Here’s what’s changed:
- A more reliable payment system for booking permits
- Two new habituated gorilla groups now open for trekking
- Golden cat tracking added as an extra wildlife experience
If you’ve had trouble finding available gorilla permits before, these updates could make things easier for you.
More Gorilla Families, More Trekking Opportunities
The highlight of the update is the addition of two fully habituated gorilla groups in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda’s premier gorilla trekking destination:
- Happy Group – located in the Buhoma sector
- Nshanjare Group – located in the Rushaga sector
These groups are now part of the official UWA booking system, meaning you can reserve permits for them just like any other gorilla family.
While the number of daily permits remains controlled to protect the gorillas, these new groups help spread demand and give trekkers a slightly better chance of finding availability — especially during peak travel seasons.
Still, one thing hasn’t changed: gorilla permits sell out fast, so early booking is essential.
Updated Permit Payment Process
UWA has also improved how payments are handled at its headquarters in Kampala. A new Inplant Machine is now used to process all cash payments for permits and other services.
Here’s what trekkers should know:
- Payments take about 24 hours to reflect in the system
- Once confirmed, your permit is issued immediately
- Office hours are Monday–Friday (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) and Saturday (9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.)
The new system is built to be clearer and more efficient, but it also means you’ll need to plan ahead and give your payment time to clear.
Bonus Experience: Golden Cat Tracking in Kibale
Gorilla trekking might be the main draw for most people, but UWA has added something new for those who want to stretch their adventure — golden cat tracking in Kibale National Park.
It happens in the Kanyanchu area and gives you a rare chance to follow one of Africa’s most secretive wild cats.
Quick details:
- Booking is done on-site (not online)
- Reserve at least 24–48 hours in advance
- Cost is $350 per person for a five-day tracking window
- You’ll need a guide, while UWA provides ranger support
It’s a great add-on for travelers who want more than just gorilla trekking and are interested in unique wildlife encounters.
Why This Matters if You Love Gorilla Trekking
These changes are really about making your whole trekking experience better. With more gorilla families available and a booking process that’s easier to follow, planning your trip becomes less stressful and more predictable.
At the same time, UWA still keeps trekking numbers tightly controlled so gorilla tourism stays sustainable and safe for the animals.
So even though access is improving, the experience itself stays just as personal and special as it’s always been.
Tips for Booking Your Gorilla Trek
- Secure your gorilla permit months ahead, especially if you’re traveling in peak season
- Build in that 24-hour payment processing window when you confirm your booking
- Work with a trusted tour operator to lock in permits and sort out the logistics
- Think about adding other experiences, like chimpanzee tracking or golden cat tracking, to your trip
Start Planning Your Gorilla Trekking Adventure
