8 Days Rwanda Congo Uganda Safari Tour – Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Tour The Gisozi Genocide Memorial & Drive to Volcanoes National Park

Following breakfast at your place of stay in Kigali (Own arrangement), you embark on the tour to the Kigali Genocide memorial positioned at Gisozi one of the suburbs of Kigali city to explore into the dark history of destination Rwanda.

The Museum is a living testimony of the 1994 horrific ethnic driven genocide that befell Rwanda leaving over 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus dead.

From the genocide site tour, you settle for lunch and then set off for the drive 116km about 2 ½ – 3 hours drive exploring the scenic Rwanda countryside marked by beautiful hills that have earned her a dub as the land of a thousand hills.

You arrive in Ruhengeri / Volcanoes National Park and spend the rest of the day at leisure enjoying the beauty of the lodge

Day 2: Do Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park & Drive to Lake Kivu – Gisenyi For Relaxation

You wake up early for breakfast after which you gather at Kinigi Park Headquarters to enjoy the interesting traditional Intore dance and a soothing cup of Rwandan coffee as you await briefing at 8am.

After the gorilla family allocation, you get into your vehicle with an armed ranger guide and connect to the trail head from which start off the trek in the Mountain Gorilla forest.

Perched on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes, the gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park as well includes traversing rugged terrain and dense jungle until you come across these gentle giants as they forage or socialize depending on the time you finally come across them.

The direct viewing is limited to one hour for purposes of conservation after which you retreat to the starting point and connect to Gisenyi 110km about 2 hours transfer arriving in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day at leisure enjoying the soothing beach environment.

Day 3: Do a Hike to Nyiragongo Volcano

Connect to the border of Democratic Republic of Congo at Goma and transfer to Virunga National Park in particular Kibati Patrol post to catch up with briefing at 9am and eventual setting off for the Volcano climbing adventure.

Rising to 3470m above sea level, the hike to Nyiragongo Volcano is simple and yet fascinating one offering sights of the surrounding seven volcanoes and the world’s largest and most violent lava lake.

The Nyiragongo hike lasts 4 – 6 hours and night sightseeing of the red glowing lava lake is a memorable wonder that makes the mountain very exciting to explore.

Day 4: Descend From Nyiragongo Volcano & Connect to Uganda – Relaxation at Lake Bunyonyi

You wake up to enjoy the fascinating sun rise view, the morning freshness across the overlooking Mountains and the rotating clouds before settling for breakfast.

After breakfast, embark on descent back to the starting point to mark the end of the Mountain hike. Get back to the vehicle and drive to Uganda via Bunagana border or through Rwanda.

You are welcomed by the fascinating Kigezi Highlands before approaching Lake Bunyonyi for relaxation. You enjoy amazing scenery of the lake dubbed the lake of a thousand Islands because of its 29 Islands and a canoe paddle can be arranged.

Day 5: Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park & Do an En-route Game Drive in Ishasha Sector in Search of Tree Climbing Lions

Following breakfast, you set off for the transfer to Uganda Savannah park of Queen Elizabeth National Park 289km about 8hours drive with an en route game drive in the park’s southern sector of the park to look out for the tree climbing lions.

Besides the tree climbing lions, the drive also offers possibilities of viewing Elephants, Defassa waterbuck, Kobs, Topis among others.

From this encounter, you drive to the northern sector of the park for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Do an Extensive Game Drive in Kasenyi Sector, Afternoon Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise and Evening Game Drive Along The Channel Track

You connect to the park at 7am for a 3 – 4 hour game drive in the Savannah stretches of Kasenyi sector to the north east of Queen Elizabeth National Park where chances of viewing a range of wild game including Lions, Elephants, Buffaloes, Waterbucks, Side striped jackal, Topis, Oribis, warthogs and Leopard among others.

From the game drive, you connect to the lodge for short relaxation and lunch and then connect to Mweya jetty for an afternoon boat ride setting off at 2pm.

The boat ride takes 2 hours exploring the amazing beauty of the 45km long Kazinga Channel with possible sights of Nile crocodiles, Hippos, birds like African skimmers and Cormorants not forgetting the wild game drinking on the channel side.

From the boat cruise, you take a game drive along the channel track for more wild game viewing as you connect to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park For a Game Drive in The Evening.

Following breakfast, set off for the transfer to Lake Mburo National Park 180km about 3 hours drive exploring the amazing views of the areas en route including the lush forest of Kalinzu and the Bunyaruguru Crater field.

An optional Chimpanzee trekking can be arranged in Kalinzu Forest Reserve en route to Lake Mburo NP. You proceed to Mbarara making a traditional lunch stop at Igongo Cultural Center after which you proceed to the park arriving in the afternoon.

You undertake an evening game drive exploring the sun set views of the Savannah and wild game grazing such as; Impala, Burchell’s Zebra, Warthogs, the water bucks, the Rothschild giraffes, the Topis among others.

Day 8: Undertake a Morning Walking Safari And Drive to Kampala

Do a morning game walking Safari setting off from the Rwonyo Tourism Center in the company of park armed ranger guide at 7am.

This activity presents a once in a life time encounter with wild game as it offers a close look without scaring the animals away by automobile engines.

The walk offers remarkable views of the Savannah, the protruding Precambrian rocks over 500 million years old and wild game like Impala, Burchell’s Zebra, Warthogs, Elands, the water bucks, the Rothschild giraffes, the Topis among others.

The park is also good for birding with chances of viewing the endemic Red faced Barbet. Retreat from the two (2) hour activity and transfer to Kampala 240km about 3 – 4 hours drive making a stop at Uganda Equator crossing Kayabwe.
