Facts About Eastern Lowland Gorillas in Kahuzi Biega Naitonal Park – Congo Gorilla Safari News

Kahuzi Biega National Park (Parc National De Kahuzi Biega) is located in South Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo and a proud home to the largest gorilla species known as Eastern lowland Gorillas or the Grauer’s gorillas always sought after during Congo gorilla safaris and tours.

The Eastern lowland Gorilla is one of the two sub-species of Gorillas found mostly in the jungles of Central and Eastern Africa, as well as their counter parts, the Mountain Gorillas. Congo is proud to harbour both of these species making the safaris in Congo beyond the ordinary!

The socialist Eastern lowland Gorillas stay in groups / families under the leadership and protection of a dominant male.

The male is responsible for mating with the female members of the group and produce babies and the babies will stay with their mothers until 3 years old when they become independent.

Because of its enormous size, the Eastern lowland Gorilla has few predators but poaching has been a major threat and has drastically reduced their population with current statistics showing only 5000 Eastern lowland Gorillas known to be thriving in the wild.

  • They are large in terms of size compared to all other gorilla subspecies.
  • They are absolutely herbivorous, eating wide range of plants, fruits, seeds, leaves, stems and barks, ants, termites and insects.
  • Males weigh up to 250kg and averagely 2m tall when standing.
  • They have short muzzle, stocky body and large hands
