Okapi Wildlife Reserve – A Home To The Okapi Of Congo – Congo Safari News

One of the attractions that can be encountered on a Safari to Congo is the Okapi Wildlife Reserve.

This is a World Heritage Site that sits in the Ituri Forest that rests in the north-eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, nearing the borders of Uganda & Suda.

Sitting at approximately 14,000 Square kilometers, the reserve covers approximately one fifth of the whole entire forest Area.

The mighty rivers of Nepoko, Ituri and Epulu, all flow through the reserve, with the imposing Mbiya Mountain overlooking the Epulu village.

The reserve is home to about 5,000 okapi – a unique zebra looking mammal, bears striped markings reminiscent of zebras, but most closely related to the giraffe 4,000 elephants, 2,000 leopards, plus some counts of chimpanzees and crocodiles.

The wildlife can still be visited by travelers on Congo Gorilla Safaris and more animals that can be spotted in the Ituri rain forest include the forest buffalo and water chevrotain.

For visitors on Congo Birding Safaris, the reserve still works for them, as it has over 300 species of birds, and is considered to be one of the most important sites for bird conservation in the African Continent.  The Nomadic pygmies of Mbuti and indigenous Bantu farmers also thrive within the reserve.

On the other side, the country also happens to be one of the three lucky countries with the famous mountain Gorillas.

Visitors on Congo Gorilla Safaris are always lucky to see these fabulous animals that only thrive in Africa. other Gorillas can still be encountered on a Safari to Uganda and Rwanda Safari.
